Kentucky Bluegrass Nominee for 2013 Grades 6-8
A post World War II setting during the Red Scare where families were being watched and placed on the Communist watch list. Janie is a teenage girl moved to England to escape the threat because her parents are being watched. Upon arriving to London she goes with her father to The Apothecary. This is where she has her first experience with remedies. Through her new school she meets the Apothecary's son. They begin many adventures that include other remedies that help save their lives including the defusing of an atomic bomb. The only problem is Janie doesn't remember a thing.
This is a very entertaining story that will keep the imagination running. Students will find it entertaining with the different remedies and how they escape the teacher and German that are chasing them. It is a new perspective on history and the fact people were watched by the United States government because of the fear they might be Communist. This will open a door to history that is often missed in social studies or history classes. Slow in places is made up for by the humor that the character, Pip gives during the great escape.
